What is a ceramic coating?
A ceramic coating is a professionally applied liquid polymer which then hardens and bonds to a car’s exterior to create a protective layer. Unlike waxes and sealants, ceramic coatings last for years, making them a premium option for drivers.
How does a ceramic coating work?
Ceramic coatings work by bonding to your car at a microscopic level, creating a hard, invisible shield. Made from silicon dioxide (SiO2) and nanotechnology which intensifies durability and bonding strength, it fills tiny pores in the paint or other component of the vehicle where it is being applied. This creates an exceptionally smooth and durable layer which repels environmental contaminants, UV rays, oxidation, minor scratches and more. The result is you keep your car looking new for longer than other forms of vehicle protection such as waxes or sealants, with less maintenance.
What are the benefits of a ceramic coating?
The main benefit of a ceramic coating is its powerful protection against environmental damage. It shields your vehicle from dirt, bird droppings, bug splatter, tree pollen, sap, tar, acid rain, hard water minerals, and UV rays. The best part about this powerful protection is that it lasts for years, so you don't ever have to wax your vehicle again. Another benefit is that a ceramic coating is self-cleaning. Because the coating is able to repel dirt & water, your vehicle will stay cleaner for longer after washes and reduces your maintenance time. With added resistance to minor scratches, enhanced gloss and shine, and preserved vehicle value, it’s easy to see why ceramic coatings are so popular.
Why choose Shine Plus for your ceramic coating?
Shine Plus has several years of experience in the professional application ceramic coatings. Incorrect coating installation can lead to problems such as streaks & high spots which spoil the appearance of your vehicle which you were trying to preserve, or early coating failure where the coating will not live up to its advertised lifespan. Another sign of poor installation is a coating that gets applied to paint which is not properly corrected, with scratches, swirl marks, hazing or fading still present. When you get your coating applied by Shine Plus you don't have to worry about any of this! We professionally correct the paint before the coating is applied & use the industries highest standards for application technique.

Where on my vehicle can I put a ceramic coating?
Your Paint & Entire Vehicle
Vehicles getting a ceramic coating on the paint first undergo a paint inspection to determine the level of paint correction required before application of the coating. Scratches, fading, swirl marks and other imperfections are then expertly removed, and the vehicle undergoes a decontamination process which goes well beyond washing. After the decontamination and paint correction, the ceramic coating is carefully applied for a flawless finish. This service includes a ceramic coating application on the glass and plastic trim pieces on the exterior of the vehicle.

Vehicle Glass
Protect your windshield and windows with a ceramic coating formulated just for your glass. The coating provides extreme hydrophobicity which means water & dirt are swiftly repelled from the glass which improves visibility and driving safety. The coating also prevents contaminants from building on the glass which means they stay clean longer between washes.

Plastic Trim
Restore & protect your vehicles plastic trim pieces with a ceramic coating formulated specifically for this purpose. The coating will restore faded plastics to a like new appearance while also providing UV resistance, chemical resistance and self-cleaning abilities. This is one of the easiest ways to take a car that looks old and drastically change its appearance for the better.

Headlights
Restore your headlights to like new and then protect them from UV rays and the environment with a ceramic coating. Even brand new vehicles without fading benefit from this service as your vehicle does not come with a protective coating from the manufacturer. This service is an easy way to give your vehicle a rapid improvement in appearance and also improves your driving safety at night.

What are the benefits of a ceramic coating?A ceramic coating offers numerous benefits for vehicle owners, primarily by providing a durable, protective layer over the vehicle's paint. This protective layer lasts for years so you never need to wax your car again to achieve environmental protection. This coating significantly enhances the gloss and depth of the paint, giving the car a fresh, shiny look. One of the main advantages is its ability to repel water and dirt, making the vehicle easier to clean and helps the vehicle stay clean longer between washes. In addition, ceramic coating offers protection against harmful UV rays, reducing the risk of paint oxidization and fading so the car maintains a like-new look for longer. It also provides a certain level of scratch resistance, although it is not impervious to damage. Overall, a ceramic coating helps maintain the car's aesthetic appeal and can potentially increase its resale value by preserving the exterior condition.

How does a ceramic coating work?A ceramic coating works by forming a protective layer on the surface of automotive paint, providing enhanced durability and resistance to environmental contaminants. Made from liquid polymer, ceramic coatings chemically bond with the vehicle’s factory paint, creating a hydrophobic surface that repels water, dirt, and harsh chemicals. This bond not only offers a glossy finish that enhances the vehicle's appearance but also reduces the risk of minor scratches and swirl marks, as debris tends to slide off more easily. Additionally, ceramic coatings offer UV protection, preventing paint oxidation and fading over time. While not completely scratch-proof or maintenance-free, a ceramic coating significantly reduces the wear and tear vehicles undergo, preserving the paint’s appearance and making cleaning and maintenance easier.
-
Is a ceramic coating worth the investment?Investing in a ceramic coating for your vehicle can be worthwhile, depending on your priorities and usage. Ceramic coatings provide a robust protective layer that shields the car's exterior from environmental contaminants, UV rays, and minor scratches, significantly enhancing the vehicle's longevity and resale value. Additionally, they offer a high-gloss finish that ensures your car maintains a showroom shine with minimal upkeep, reducing the need for frequent waxing and washing. However, it's important to consider the initial cost, which can be higher than traditional waxing, and the fact that while it provides excellent protection, it's not completely foolproof against all kinds of damage. Ultimately, if you value long-term protection and aesthetics, and are willing to invest in a quality application service, ceramic coating can be a worthwhile enhancement for your vehicle.

How much does it usually cost to ceramic coat a car?The cost of ceramic coating a car can vary significantly depending on several factors, including the size and type of the vehicle, the quality and brand of the ceramic coating used, and the level of prep work required prior to application. On average, for a standard car, prices might range from $600 to $2,000. Smaller vehicles or those in good condition might be on the lower end of the scale, whereas larger vehicles like SUVs or trucks, or those requiring extensive paint correction, may incur costs at the higher end. Additionally, professional application by a reputable detailer will generally be more expensive than DIY options, though it often provides better protection and finish longevity. It's important for car owners to consider the long-term benefits of enhanced protection and aesthetic appeal that ceramic coating offers when evaluating the cost.
-
How long will my ceramic coating last?Shine Plus uses System X brand ceramic coatings for the vehicles exterior which are warrantied to last anywhere from six years to the life of the vehicle depending on which coating you purchase. Interior ceramic coatings from System X are warrantied to last for three years and ceramic coatings for your vehicles glass and plastic trim are warrantied for two years. Factors which affect coating longevity are primarily related to mechanical wear and tear and not time. These factors include exposure to UV rays, ambient temperature, level of exposure to environmental contaminants & proper hand washing vs exposure to automatic car washes. Professional annual maintenance should performed to ensure effectiveness of the coating throughout the warranty period.
-
What is the downside of a ceramic coating? The downside of a ceramic coating primarily revolves around its cost and maintenance expectations. While ceramic coatings offer excellent protection against scratches, chemicals, and UV damage, their initial application can be expensive compared to traditional waxes and sealants. Moreover, the application process can be time-consuming and requires professional expertise to ensure a flawless finish, which adds to the cost. Once applied, while the coating provides robustness and longevity, it is not entirely maintenance-free. Regular washing and proper care are necessary to preserve the coating's effectiveness and appearance. Additionally, if the ceramic coating gets damaged, repairing it can be challenging and might require reapplication, adding to long-term upkeep costs. Lastly, despite their protective qualities, ceramic coatings are not impervious to all forms of damage, such as stone chips or deep scratches, which may still leave marks on the car's surface.
-
Is a ceramic coating better than wax?A ceramic coating is generally considered better than wax for several reasons, although it ultimately depends on the user's needs and preferences. Ceramic coatings provide a much longer-lasting protective layer than traditional waxes, often lasting years rather than weeks or months. This durability means that vehicles require less frequent reapplication, which can save time and effort in the long run. Additionally, ceramic coatings offer superior resistance to environmental contaminants, such as UV rays, bird droppings, and even light scratches. They create a hydrophobic surface, enhancing water beading and making the vehicle easier to clean. However, ceramic coatings are typically more expensive and require professional application to ensure optimal performance, whereas wax is more cost-effective and can be applied by most car owners themselves. Ultimately, the choice between ceramic coating and wax depends on the level of protection and maintenance convenience a car owner desires.
-
Will a ceramic coating make my vehicle scratch-proof?No, a ceramic coating will make your vehicle resistant to scratching but not scratch proof. Improper wash techniques such as cleaning your car at the car wash tunnel or using stiff bristle brushes will still produces scratches. The scratches may be less deep than if the coating was not present but it will still scratch.
-
Does a ceramic coating protect against UV damage?Absolutely, this is one of the primary benefits of a ceramic coating. The UV resistance is very useful on the vehicles paint and plastics which can fade with time when unprotected.
-
Will the ceramic coating protect against bird droppings & bug splatter?Yes, it absolutely does. However it is recommended that when bird droppings or bug splatter are noticed they should be washed off the vehicle as soon as possible because these two are both highly acidic and if left unattended can slowly erode the coating.
-
Will a ceramic coating prevent damage from rock chips? No, unfortunately it will not. Rock impacts are able to damage metal, vehicle glass, and ceramic coatings as well.
-
Can a ceramic coating prevent water spots? It can provide resistance against water spots, but does not prevent them entirely. Water spots are caused when minerals are left behind from evaporating water. When those minerals are allowed to sit on the vehicle they can heat up in the sun and burn your vehicle. Ceramic coatings provide resistance in two ways. For one, ceramic coatings are hydrophobic, meaning water is quickly repelled from the vehicle meaning less minerals will build up on the surface over time. The second way they provide resistance is the coating is more resistant to heat than you paint's clear coat, so when minerals do get hot they do less damage. In order to prevent water spots on a ceramic coated car, regular washing should be included as part of the maintenance process and irrigation with hard water should be avoided.
-
Can a ceramic coating be applied to any vehicle?Yes, a ceramic coating can be applied to just about any vehicle. However, each case is different so you should consult with a professional detailer to get the best results. For example, if the vehicle has scratches or other defects in the paint, these will need to be corrected prior to the coating application. If the vehicle has a PPF or vinyl wrap then a specialty coating which is compatible with these surfaces will need to be used. If the vehicle has matte paint rather than the typical high gloss then a specialty coating should be chosen to maintain the matte look. If you have any questions or concerns about how to get the best protection for your vehicle please don't hesitate to reach out, we are here to help.
-
Can you remove a ceramic coating before applying a new one?Yes, absolutely, the process for applying a new ceramic coating is the same as applying a first time coating. The vehicle gets inspected for defects in the paint, those defects are then expertly removed and the coating then gets applied. If the first layer of coating is new and thick, then this can increase the amount of time needed to perform paint correction which can affect the cost of the service.
-
Is polishing the vehicle required prior to application of the coating? It is not always required, but the vast majority of vehicles require at least some paint correction. Even brand new vehicles are washed by the dealership while they sit on the lot, and dealerships don't always use the best techniques which can lead to scratches. We always inspect the vehicle prior to application of the coating to ensure the paint is in the best possible condition, because once the coating is applied, the only way to correct scratches in the paint would be to remove the coating layer above it.
-
How long does the application process take?Time for application depends on a few factors including size of the vehicle, condition of the paint before application of the coating and level of environmental contaminants in the paint prior to application of the coating. Smaller vehicles have less surface area and therefore the paint correction and coating application process is faster than on a large vehicle. Vehicles with extensive paint damage will take considerably than vehicles with paint in new condition. Small vehicles with new paint condition may take as little as 4 hours to complete and large vehicles with heavy paint defects can take 8 hours or more.
-
Do I have to wait to get the vehicle wet after getting a ceramic coating?Yes, it is recommend by our ceramic coating manufacturer System X that your ceramic coating stay dry for at least four hours following application.
-
Do I have to wait to wash my vehicle after getting a ceramic coating?Yes, you should wait at least one week following the application of a ceramic coating to wash your vehicle. After 4 hours the superficial layer of the coating has cured meaning it can be exposed to water, but below the outer surface the coating is still hardening so avoid any pressure which can compromise the coating.
-
Do I need to regularly wash my vehicle following application of a ceramic coating?Yes, you still need to maintain your vehicle with regular washing to reach the longevity of protection your product is advertised for. Ceramic coatings are resistant to environmental contaminants, dirt, acids & other chemicals but they are not bullet-proof. Aim to wash your vehicle once per month by hand with the two bucket wash method if possible, or Shine Plus is always ready and able to perform your regular vehicle maintenance. Avoid automatic car washes as they use harsh chemicals and the brushes collect dirt from vehicles that entered the tunnel before you, which then can scratch your vehicle and degrades your coating.
-
Should I wax my ceramic coated vehicle? You can, the wax certainly will not damage the ceramic coating, but you really don't need to. That's one of the primary benefits of a ceramic coating, you no longer need to keep reapplying protectants, the protection will last for many years.
-
What kind of soap should I use on a ceramic coated vehicle?A pH neutral car soap is best. Car soaps are formulated to have extra lubrication and are mild to protect the vehicle.
-
Does a ceramic coating require any maintenance?Yes, ceramic coating does require some maintenance to ensure that it continues to protect your vehicle and maintain its glossy appearance. While ceramic coatings are durable and offer long-lasting protection against environmental contaminants, UV rays, and minor scratches, they are not entirely maintenance-free. Regular washing with a pH-neutral car shampoo is necessary to prevent the build-up of dirt and grime that can degrade the coating over time. It's also advisable to use a consumer grade ceramic spray every few weeks to enhance the hydrophobic effect and keep the surface slick and shiny. Additionally, annual inspections and touch-ups are often needed to address any areas where the coating may have worn off or been damaged. By adhering to these maintenance practices, you can extend the life of the ceramic coating and keep your vehicle looking its best.
-

The warranty period varies based upon the coating product the customer purchases. Exterior coatings from System X are warrantied for anywhere from six years to the life of the vehicle. Professional annual maintenance of your coating should be performed to ensure effectiveness of the coating throughout the warranty period.
-

A CarFax report demonstrating a professionally applied ceramic coating will increase your vehicles resale value.
